Restoring black trim on a Porsche 964

Black trim from the 80s and 90s often presents one of the toughest challenges when doing a preservation detail. You can try to use an all purpose cleaner, or maybe selectively apply heat, but the AP cleaner often doesn’t work so you end up scrubbing too hard and scratching the surface.

Heat may melt the surface or just provide temporary relief before turning white again. So you’re left with either using a coating or replacing the trim. A replacement part may be out of place if it doesn’t match the patina of the rest of the car, so you’ll be trying different coatings. I tend to use two. If the coloring is evenly faded, often Ammo Frame Pro Trim Coating will bring it back to life.

If I have to recolor it, then I use the Solution Finish Black Restoration Kit from the Rag Company. Easy to apply, just wipe on, wipe off the excess, let it dwell for a few minutes, and wipe off the to a matte finish. Let dry over night before exposing to water. The color is dark, but not overly restored. After it has had a chance to cure, apply ceramic coating over as a topcoat for more UV protection.
